Teach me to trade on the stock market

How do I trade on the stock market? A lot of people who want to start trading ask themselves this question. The secret? There isn’t a general rule or a magical book that will teach you how to trade.

Trading has a lot to do with your instincts and your personality- if you don’t like to take a lot of chances, go with long-term, safe investment plans. On the contrary, if you’re more of an adventurer, go with the short term, risky investment. Anyway, it is very important to choose and to apply a trading strategy that you understand and you’re comfortable with.

Stock market can be an intelligent, profitable way of investing your money- that is, the money you have and you don’t need to use for anything else. You can’t start trading with borrowed money or with the money you should use for your current expenses- it doesn’t work that way.

Stock market investing isn’t a magical solution for your money problems. So, don’t take money from your credit card and start investing them at the stock market. Many people lose money on the stock market because they don’t have enough patience. And it’s very hard to be patient, if you’re trading money you don’t have. Most likely you’ll panic and you’ll sell your stocks at the worst possible moment.  In order to avoid such situations, explain to your broker what exactly do you expect from the stock market investing and he’ll teach you how to trade accordingly to your expectations and your risk profile.

The first and the very important step you need to take, if you want to learn how to trade, is to establish your risk profile- how much risk are you willing to take and how much risk do you afford to take? Professional brokers will never advice you to invest more than you can afford. It is very important to explain to your broker your financial status and you should listen to his advice. Of course, the final decision belongs to you- the broker will act accordingly to your indications. But, if you are a beginner, listen to what he has to say.

Learning how to trade is not an easy process- is quite a painful one, considering that you will learn on your own money. This is why, before you start trading, you should study this area a little bit. Dedicated media- business channels and papers- is a good place for you to start learning. Also, you can research on the Internet and even buy some books about trading.
Another thing you can do is to simulate, for a while, stock market investing- this will teach you how to trade more than any materials you might read. Establish a virtual budget- let’s say 10 000- and start “investing” them on the stock market; Try to follow your instincts and your knowledge- do this for at least a few months. If you lose all your virtual money, well, you’re probably not ready for trading. But, if the outcome of your simulation is positive, maybe it’s time to start trading with real money.
